Topic: "Algae – pond scum evolves to prime time Energy Source"
Algae as a fuel source has been researched for over 35 years by many national laboratories and major energy companies. As oil prices increase and energy security concerns arise, algae may be poised for a significant role in supplementing the energy resources of the United Sates. Major energy companies such as BP, Chevron, Shell and ExxonMobil have initiated major development into algae development. In addition, algae may have a role to play in the capture of carbon dioxide from various industrial and energy sources. The National Algae Association is focused upon promoting the technology, educating industry and legislators and establishing forums for open discussion of issues and achievements that rapidly evolve this technology.

This discussion will look at technical and economic aspects of converting algae into fuel. It will address: how it is grown, how it is harvested, the range of products produced, where does it fit into the overall energy sources; its use as a carbon dioxide “sink”, the overall economics and the challenges to scale-up and commercialization.

Speaker: Barry Cohen – Executive Director,  National Algae Association
The National Algae Association is a non-profit organization comprised of algae researchers, algae production companies and the investment community who share the goal of commercializing algae oil as an alternative feedstock for the biofuels markets. The NAA gives its members a forum to efficiently evaluate various algae technologies for potential early stage company opportunities. Mr. Cohen is the Executive Director of NAA.
