Date: Friday, September 8, 2006 Monthly Roundtable
Topic: “The Future of World Gas Trade”
Developments in natural gas markets around the world herald globalization. Increasingly, deals are being arranged or negotiated to bring natural gas supplies from Russia, the Middle East and Africa to far away consuming markets in North America, Europe and Asia. Once infrastructure is in place, these developments will hasten a fundamental change in the manner in which natural gas is traded. Natural gas prices in different regions will become more tightly linked. Long term contracts for LNG or trades over long haul pipelines are likely to become more flexible allowing for multilateral trading, short term trades to exploit arbitrage opportunities, and prices linked to futures prices determined in organized commodity markets such as the NYMEX. Finally, a global market for natural gas will imply that political developments in one region of the world will affect all regions.
